The Lung Meridian & Autumn: Breathing with the Season

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is the season of the Lungs. Just as nature sheds leaves and turns inward, our bodies naturally shift to a phase of letting go, conserving energy, and finding clarity. The Lung meridian, which governs breath, vitality (Qi), and our boundary with the outside world, becomes especially important at this time of year.

Nature’s Influence

Autumn air often feels crisp and dry. Just as falling leaves leave trees bare, the Lung energy can feel more exposed and sensitive. This is why many people notice more coughs, dry skin, or even a heaviness in the chest during this season. Energetically, it’s also a time for grief and release. Letting go of what no longer serves, so new growth can take root in the coming spring.

Health Tips for Autumn

  • Breathe deeply & consciously: Nourish your Lung Qi with slow, full breaths.
  • Stay hydrated: Counteract autumn dryness with warm teas, soups, and plenty of water.
  • Eat seasonally: Pears, apples, radishes, daikon, and warming spices (ginger, cinnamon) support Lung health.
  • Protect against dryness: Use oils on the skin or add a humidifier indoors.
  • Honor emotions: Make space for reflection and release—journaling, mindful walks, or simply acknowledging grief.

Yin & Fascia Practices

  • Supported Fish Pose (Matsyasana variation): Open the chest and soften the fascia around the heart and lungs.
  • Bananasana (Side body stretch): Lengthens Lung meridian pathways along the torso and arms.
  • Shoulder openers with a bolster or block: Gently free up tension in the chest wall and intercostal fascia.
  • Slow fascia unwinding: Use mindful micro-movements and long holds to hydrate and release tissue layers.

By aligning with the rhythm of autumn and the Lung meridian, we strengthen not only our physical immunity but also our emotional resilience. This season is an invitation: let go, breathe deeply, and prepare for renewal.
