We live in a world that often asks us to live from the neck up. We are encouraged to think, to analyze, and to solve our lives using logic. Yet, for many women, there is a lingering feeling that something is missing. You might feel like a ghost in your own life, or perhaps you feel a persistent tightness in your chest that no amount of positive thinking can reach.
This is because your story is not just a mental narrative. It is a physical experience.
What is Somatic Healing?
The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, which means the living body. In the context of healing, it refers to an approach that centers the physical body as the primary place of transformation. While traditional talk therapy focuses on the mind to change our behavior, somatic healing works from the bottom up. We start with the sensations, the breath, and the tissues.
Most of our stress and trauma is not stored as a memory in the brain that we can easily access with words. Instead, it is stored as a nervous system response. Somatic energy healing is the practice of tracking these internal sensations, whether it is a flutter in the belly, a constriction in the throat, or a heavy weight in the pelvis and giving them the space to complete their natural cycle of release.
It is a process of unravelling the layers of protection we have built around our hearts. It is not something you “do” to your body; it is a way of being with your body. Here, we move away from the idea of “fixing” and move toward the art of receiving. We receive the signals our body is sending and meet them with a profound sense of safety and presence.
Your Body Remembers What You Have Lived
Your body is a living library. It has recorded every experience, every suppressed emotion, and every moment where you didn’t feel safe to express your truth. Research in the field of somatic experiencing and trauma recovery shows that when we face overwhelming stress, our nervous system enters a state of survival—fight, flight, or freeze.
If we are unable to discharge that energy at the moment it happens, it becomes trapped inside our body. You might have moved on from a difficult situation years ago, but your body may still be acting as if the threat is present. This is why we often feel “stuck” or find ourselves repeating the same emotional patterns even when we logically know better.
In my work with women, I often see how the body holds onto the energy of “doing” and “protecting.” We carry the weight of our families, our careers, and our pasts in our shoulders and our hips. Somatic healing allows us to acknowledge these holding patterns. It teaches us that the body doesn’t hold tension to annoy us; it holds tension to protect us. When we acknowledge this with compassion, the body feels safe to let that armor melt away.
The Role of Fascia in Somatic Healing
The fascia is the silver-white connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, bone, organ, and nerve. It is a continuous web that holds your entire structure together. It is highly sensitive and contains more nerve endings than almost any other part of the body.
Think of your fascia like a river system. When you are healthy and regulated, the fascia is fluid, elastic, and hydrated. It allows energy and movement to flow freely. However, when we experience chronic stress or unprocessed emotions, the fascia gets thicken and tighten. It becomes like a dam in the river. Over time, this stored negative energy creates physical stiffness, chronic pain, and a feeling of being densified or heavy.
During my Fascia Release session, we work with the areas where your body is holding tension. Through gentle pressure and intuitive myofascial unwinding, the tissue begins to soften. As the fascia opens, the emotional charge trapped within it often begins to move. This is why women sometimes experience waves of heat, gentle trembling, or tears during a session. It is not a sign of distress; it is the physical evidence of your river system becoming clear again.
Signs Your Body Is Holding Tension or Emotions
Because we are so used to living in a state of high alert, we often don’t even realize how much we are carrying until it becomes a physical symptom. The body usually gives subtle signs before things become more intense. Learning to notice these early signals is often the first step toward change.
Physical Rigidity and Pain
Common physical signs that your system is overloaded include chronic tension in the neck and jaw, frequent headaches, and back pain. When the fascia is tight, it pulls on the musculoskeletal system, creating a cycle of discomfort that rest alone cannot fix.
Digestive and Energetic Stagnation
Your gut is often referred to as your “second brain,” and it is highly responsive to the state of your nervous system. If you are constantly in a state of subtle “fight or flight,” your digestion will often reflect that through bloating or discomfort. Energetically, you might feel a sense of numbness or a lack of vitality, as if your inner “battery” can no longer hold a charge.
Emotional Heaviness and Numbness
You might feel like you are watching your life from a distance rather than living it. Other signs include a shallow breath that stays in the upper chest, an inability to relax even when you are tired, and a feeling of being “on edge.” These are signals from a nervous system that is longing for a sense of deep, somatic safety.
What Somatic Healing Can Help With
The beauty of somatic energy healing is that its benefits touch every layer of our being. By working with the body’s natural intelligence, we can find relief from both mental and physical burdens.
Processing Trauma and Anxiety
For those navigating anxiety or PTSD, somatic work provides a way to regulate the nervous system without having to relive the trauma through stories. It helps the body realize that the past is over and that the present moment is safe. Studies have shown that somatic experiencing can significantly reduce symptoms of intrusion and arousal, leading to a calmer and more grounded daily life.
Relieving Chronic Pain and Inflammation
Physically, this work is profoundly effective for chronic pain, particularly in the back, hips, and pelvic floor. By releasing the fascia and improving the flow of breath, we reduce the inflammatory response in the body. Women often find that somatic healing helps with hormonal balance as it clears the stagnation in the pelvic bowl.
Restoring Feminine Vitality
It is also a powerful tool for grief and depression, as it helps us move the “heavy” energy of sadness out of the tissues and back into the flow of life. When the body softens, we rediscover our capacity for pleasure, intuition, and the vibrant sensuality of simply being alive.
Simple Ways to Start Somatic Healing: Somatic Healing Exercises
You do not need to wait for a crisis to begin connecting with your body. Somatic energy healing is a daily practice of listening. You can begin right now, in this moment, with simple somatic healing exercises that invite a gentle presence into your body.
Breath and Nervous System Regulation
Instead of trying to control your breath, simply observe it. Where does it go? Does it reach your belly, or does it stop at your ribs? By gently inviting the breath to soften into the lower abdomen, you send a direct signal to your vagus nerve that it is safe to relax. This moves you from survival mode into a state of receptivity and openness.
Somatic Tracking and Grounding
Notice the weight of your body against your chair or the floor. This is grounding. It brings your awareness out of the future or the past and into the immediate physical reality of “here.” From this grounded place, try “tracking”, following a sensation in the body without trying to change it. If you feel a tightness in your throat, simply notice its shape, its temperature, and its texture. Often, simply being “seen” by your awareness is enough for a sensation to begin to shift.
Intuitive Movement and Fascia Flow
Put on a piece of music that feels resonant and let your body move without a plan. This is not exercise; it is an unwinding. Let your spine undulate, shake your hands to release excess energy, or simply sway. This helps the fascia stay fluid and prevents new tension from becoming locked in your system.
Good News! You Don’t Have to Fix Yourself
The most important thing to remember about somatic healing is that it is not another task to add to your to-do list. In our culture, we are often taught that we are “broken” and need to be “fixed.” We approach self-improvement with a masculine energy of force and discipline. But the body does not respond to force. It responds to tenderness.
Somatic healing is a soft invitation to stop fighting yourself. Your body already knows how to heal. It knows how to breathe, how to circulate blood, and how to repair its own cells. Our only job is to create the conditions, the safety and the space for that natural intelligence to do its work.
As a Yin Yoga teacher, I have spent years working closely with the body and its patterns. Over time, I’ve seen how closely the physical and emotional layers are connected. My own experience of becoming a mother deepened this understanding. That transition brings a lot of change, and it often asks us to listen to the body in a different way and learn to trust what we feel.
If you are ready to explore these ancient rituals and the power of fascia therapy more deeply, I have captured my insights and rituals in my e-book, “The Woman Within – Healing Rituals for the Physical & Emotional Body.“ It is a guide designed to help you connect with the yin energy flow within, supporting your healing process on a spiritual and physical level through womb healing, cacao ceremonies, and breathing techniques.
When you start trusting the guidance of your body, you will trust the guidance of your soul. It’s all connected.
Let yourself be as you are. There is nothing you need to become right now. Allow yourself to breathe, to feel, and to settle into your body at your own pace.
If you feel the call to dive deeper into this unravelling, you can find The Woman Within in my shop or join me for a 1:1 session where we can listen to your body’s story together.
You are always welcome here.
